Cool climate and English colonial houses, Darjeeling is the quintessential hill station. The town sprawls along a ridge about 80 kms. north of Siliguri, backed by an incredible panorama of Himalayan peaks. A number of interesting treks are possible in the hills around Darjeeling. Most popular is the trek along the Singalila Ridge from Sandakphu (3636m) to Phalut (3600m), which passes through the scenic Singalila National Park and offers fantastic views of the Himalaya. A spectacular trek along the Singalila Ridge, travelling, through Nepalese villages and alpine meadows and rewarding trekkers with magnificent views of Kanchenjunga. During the trek you will pass several Buddhist religious structures called Chortens (Stupas), before entering Singalila National Park. As you trek through the forest of rhododendron and oak, colorful prayer flags and mani walls (walls carved with Buddhist prayers) greet you as you walk along. A magnificent view during the trek of upper Singalila Ridge makes this a superb trek. The starting point for this trek is Manebhanjang, 26 kms. from Darjeeling and the trek ends at Rimbik from where a coach will bring you back to Darjeeling. |
